چکیده

The usage of smartphones has rapidly increased during the last years. In addition to communication capabilities, they are also equipped with several sensors, and are usually carried by people throughout the day. The data collected by the means of modern smartphones (e.g. location based, GSM, and other contextual data) are thus valuable source of information for transportation analysis. In this paper we focus on smartphone data used for transportation mode detection. This is important for many applications including urban planning, context related advertisements or supply planning by public transportation entities. We present a review of the existing approaches for transportation mode detection, and compare them in terms of (i) the type and the number of used input data, (ii) the considered transportation mode categories and (iii) the algorithm used for the classification task. We consider these aspects as the most relevant when evaluating the performance of the analyzed approaches. Finally, the paper identifies the gaps in the field and determines future research directions.

Improvement of the Effective Components in the PDR Positioning Method Based on Detecting the User’s Movement Mode Using Smartphone Sensors

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and improve the accuracy of indoor positioning using smartphone sensors based on Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) method. In some specific situations, such as fires or power outages that disable infrastructure-based positioning techniques, using PDR method based on smartphone sensors that perform positioning continuously is a good solution. This paper focu...

Real-Time Transportation Mode Identification Using Artificial Neural Networks Enhanced with Mode Availability Layers: A Case Study in Dubai

Traditionally, departments of transportation (DOTs) have dispatched probe vehicles with dedicated vehicles and drivers for monitoring traffic conditions. Emerging assisted GPS (AGPS) and accelerometer-equipped smartphones offer new sources of raw data that arise from voluntarily-traveling smartphone users provided that their modes of transportation can correctly be identified. By introducing ad...

Travel Mode Detection Based on GPS Raw Data Collected by Smartphones: A Systematic Review of the Existing Methodologies

Over the past couple of decades, Global positioning system (GPS) technology has been utilized to collect large-scale data from travel surveys. As the precise spatiotemporal characteristics of travel could be provided by GPS devices, the issues of traditional travel survey, such as misreporting and non-response, could be addressed. Considering the defects of dedicated GPS devices (e.g., need muc...

Urban Sensing: Using Smartphones for Transportation Mode Classification

We present a prototype mobile phone application that implements a novel transportation mode detection algorithm. The application is designed to run in the background, and continuously collects data from built-in acceleration and network location sensors. The collected data is analysed automatically and partitioned into activity segments. A key finding of our work is that walking activity can be...
